Valletta - capital of Malta
History of Valletta is not long (the foundation stone was not laid until 1566), but closely linked with Order of the Knights of Malta. It was they who chose the Sciberras Penisula-situated between the two harbors of Grand Harbour and Marsamxett-as the site for the construction of a fortified city.
It was founded by Grand Master Jean Parisot de La Valette, after whom the city was named. One of the oldest buildings-the Grand Master's Palace-also dates back to this period. In Valletta, the facades of the buildings don't reveal what is hidden inside, and the palace is a prime example of this. Stepping inside, you find yourself in a large courtyard, from which corridors lead to historic chambers.
We begin the tour with a scenic drive along the coast towards the Grand Harbour, which is overlooked by the island's capital, Valletta.
A walk down Republic Street, past historic palaces and churches.
We will proceed to St. John's Co-Cathedral, where we will see an exceptionally rich interior. In the Cathedral's oratory, you can admire, among others, Caravaggio's painting "The Beheading of Saint John".
We will visit the Barrakka Gardens, which offer a beautiful panoramic view of the Grand Harbour.
Admission ticket to the Cathedral is at an additional cost: adults 15 EUR, seniors 12 EUR.
Optional excursions:
Gozo island
A sunny island in the Mediterranean Sea, halfway between Europe and Africa. Located just 6 km off the northern coast of Malta, it's the second-largest island of the archipelago.
We will reach the picturesque island of Gozo by ferry from the port of Cirkewwa in Malta to Mgarr in Gozo; the crossing takes less than half an hour.
The island of the archipelago offers us magnificent views which, along with the nymph Calypso, became the reason why Odysseus decided to spend seven years here.
During our tour, we will visit the most interesting viewpoints. We will visit Xlendi, which lies at the very end of a narrow, fjord-like bay. Turquoise water, high cliffs, and a tiny beach are the charms of this picturesque corner.
While exploring the island with a guide, we are accompanied by the tranquility characteristic of the local towns and fabulous landscapes. It's worth learning the history of the Ġgantija temples, which were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for good reason. Next, we will visit the capital, Ir-Rabat, which offers a breathtaking view of the city from its famous citadel. When staying in such an interesting place, there must be time for shopping - Gozo is famous not only for its woolen products and handmade lace, but you can also purchase original local products here, such as olives, such-dried tomatoes, capers, prickly pear jam, and honeys. After shopping, a visit to Ramla Beach - known for the unusual red color of its sand. Next, a visit to a viewpoint in the Dwejra area, where you can observe the sprawling rock formations shaped by the sea over thousands of years.
Price 80 EUR/person. includes:
-
coach transport,
-
round-trip ferry crossing,
-
tasting of prickly pear liqueur, almond liqueur, etc.,
-
Polish-speaking guide service.
Blue Grotto - Marsaxlokk, Dingli Cliffs - Mdina - Rabat
The Blue Grotto is one of those places you simply cannot miss before leaving Malta. The cave's name refers to the cobalt reflections of light bouncing off the water and illuminating its interior.
We will begin the excursion from the small fishing village of Wied iż-Żurrieq, from where you can take a boat ride along the picturesque cliffs to the "Blue Grotto". Continuing further north, we will reach the Dingli Cliffs, situated 250 meters above sea level. Next, we will move to the central part of the island, where the fortified former capital, Mdina, sits atop a hill. We will walk through its historic streets and reach the bastions, which offer a magnificent view. We will also visit the adjacent town of Rabat, where St. Paul lived for three months after arriving in Malta in the year 60 AD. Finally, we will visit the church in Mosta, which boasts one of the largest domes in the world, and tour the Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady, where a replica of the German bomb dropped on April 9, 1942, is located.
The final point of the itinerary is the most important of the fishing villages - Marsaxlokk, where you can find numerous cafes and restaurants along the promenade, and the bright colors of the anchored "luzzu" fishing boats give the bay its unique character.
Price: 80 EUR/person. includes:
-
coach transport,
-
Polish-speaking guide service,
-
boat tickets for the Blue Grotto,
-
admission tickets to the church in Most.
