Greece 2023

Loutraki near Corinth

One of the oldest Greek spas of Loutraki, in ancient times called Therma from hot springs. It was famous for its medicinal values already in Roman and Byzantine times. Today, in the spa, modern methods of hydrotherapy are used for many health ailments (rheumatism, joints, diseases of the nervous system and skin), but also for purely relaxation purposes. Loutraki is also a modern resort full of life and entertainment. We will find here e.g. casino. Although the beach here is pebbly, it is worth taking diving glasses with you because the sea is exceptionally clear. Interestingly, in the local bars and taverns we will not get anything to drink but the local healing water!

Bus trip to Athens
Sightseeing, among others Acropolis

An oval-shaped limestone hill towering over Athens, 157 m high, area approx. 3 ha. In antiquity, a center of religious worship; Two roads led to it: Panatenajska and Trójnogów. Settlement on the Acropolis of Athens is attested from the Stone Age, from the period of the Mycenaean culture, the remains of the walls, the so-called pelasgicon. In the 6th century BC, Solon and Pisistratus initiated broader construction works here: the temple of Athena (the so-called Hekatompedon) was erected, and on the site of the older temple (Archaeus Naos) - the temple of Athena Polias, i.e. the city's patroness; the former Mycenaean gate was replaced with the first Propylaia.
The temple of Nike Apteros was built in the years 425-421 according to the design of Kallikrates, it must be emphasized that it was built during the war with Sparta. It was completed just after the signing of the Peace of Nicias in 421. Decoration continued until 413. Callicrates' building was to replace a modest older temple destroyed by the Persians in 480.
The Doric Parthenon with its wonderfully preserved columns is a classic work of Attic architecture, combining the Doric order with Ionic elements.

Areopagus

with the preserved Doric temple of Hephaestus in ancient Athens, a council composed of former archons for life. Its name comes from the place of the meeting - the hill dedicated to Ares (Greek Arejos pagos), where the temple of Ares with the right of asylum for assassins was located.

The stadium of the first modern Olympics

The Panathenaic Stadium is located on the slope of Ardettos Hill, on the site of an ancient stadium from the 4th century BC, built during the reign of Lycurgus. Panathenaic athletics competitions were held here in antiquity.

Changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Plateia Syntagmatos
The parliament building is named after the second Royal Palace. Guardsmen in traditional costume and shoes with pompoms are on guard - there is a change of guard every hour on the hour. This is quite a spectacular event.

Shopping in Athens Square "PLAKA"

is one of the most beautiful districts of the capital, with many historic houses richly decorated with stucco. There are also some beautiful gardens with palm trees and citrus trees. In this part of the city there are many shops, restaurants, cafes and squares full of greenery. And although Plaka is geared towards tourists, this has not destroyed its specific character.
At every turn, in every avenue and alley, there is a new surprise: church, ancient remains, neoclassical remains or Franconian houses - all this is full of life. Plaka can absorb you for days. You can wander around visiting countless shops that attract with their beauty. There you can buy hand-woven carpets, furs, leather and gold products. The main and therefore one of the more expensive shopping arcades is Adriana Street (Adrianou), running in the north-west of the district.

Bus trip to Argolis
Bus trip to the Corinth Canal
The Corinth Canal is a shipping canal in Greece, connecting the Aegean Sea (Saronic Gulf) with the Ionian Sea (Gulf of Corinth). This canal crosses the Isthmus of Corinth, thus separating the Peloponnese peninsula from the main part of Greece, making it effectively an island. Almost at the mouth of the Corinth Canal lies the city of Corinth. It was built in 1882-1893. It could save some ships the 400km journey they would have to make around the Peloponnese.
Epidavros - one of the most important monuments of ancient Greece - a magnificent ancient theater, built at the end of the 4th century BC by Poliklet the Younger.
Due to the phenomenal acoustics, ancient dramas, especially those of Sophocles, Euripides and Aeschylus, have been staged here every year for many years as part of the Athens Festival.

Mycenae

To the east of the Corinth-Argos road lies the fortified citadel of Agamemnon in Mycenae, tucked between the hills. It is a place that could be the setting of Greek legends.
Traces of the original settlement date back to the 3rd millennium BC. Excavations are being carried out on the site of the former stronghold. The most important of them include the ruins of the acropolis with the remains of the palace and well-equipped shaft and chamber tombs (including golden masks, e.g. Agamemnon's mask, jewelry, luxury weapons).
The most famous tombs found in the necropolis include the Treasury of Atreus, also known as the grave of Agamemnon, and the tomb of Clytemnestra.

Nafplion

From 230 meters high, which is the Palamidi rock, the view is magnificent. Underfoot, a rocky promontory like a short thick sickle cuts into the blue waters of the Argolic Gulf. On the right, the bay ends, the shore makes a semicircle and recedes south along the mountain coast of the Peloponnese.
The red roofs of the houses that spread out on the promontory attract the eye - this is Nafplion, a city full of monuments, taverns, guesthouses, located in the picturesque Argolis, where there are the most antiquity monuments in all of Greece. Palamidi is one of the most powerful Venetian-Turkish fortresses in all of Hellas (admission 4 euros). Its long walls built in the years 1711-14 climb the edge of the great rock of the same name, an almost vertical cliff rising from the sea and overlooking Nafplion.
